Jinjonator, I guess a lot of stories and characters are born as cliches. Of course some ideas sounds better than others, but I have seen so many ordinary things become amazing. Anyway, writing using characters that already have a strong archetype in society is good and bad. Its good because you can cut a lot of bullsh* from the story: after saying Jesus Christ, there is a lot that you can keep out, because your readers get a "click" when they read the name.

What I would do, if I wanted to explore this theme through the character, is to pretend he is someone else. Different name, different locations, different time, I don't know, something like that. Give the readers the benefit of doubt, leave open spaces for interpretation, etc.
