Default technical article in two parts

I am translating for an author who poses, let us be diplomatic, unconventional theories. He has written two papers, the second of which depends on the reader having read the first one.... obviously a bad idea, but I'm not one to dissuade him, since he pays. But the question is: does anyone ever do this? There are too many coined words for him to explain them all again in his second paper, but can one merely give the reader a free link (that is, non-paying) to the first paper, and ask the reader to get the definitions from there?
