If your main character is intentionally bland, how do you make him interesting? He is supposed to blend into the background of society, barely noticed by others, until he is thrust into an interesting situation.

Your protagonist can possess qualities of a loaner, extreme introvert, reserved intellectual or recluse. Take a look at some of the great lead introverts from books you may have read. My favorites are Gatsby and Bilbo (Lord of the Rings). Ways to create depth while your protag is laying low.
-remarkable backstory
-dangerous plans
-make the protag the narrator (extremely observant)
-a repulsive physical flaw he or she attempts to hide
-a quiet confidence
-compassion shown through small acts of kindness no one notices
-extreme sorrow and thoughts of ending life
-small tics and quirks
-sharp mind/brilliant genius
-unusual family life
-unusual hobby or passion

just some ideas

Give him/her a point of view.

Hi Nil.

Your bland MC is no longer bland when confronted with a call to action. If he runs from it he's probably bland again. If he creates action he is not longer bland. Google 'Everyman main characters in fiction' for an indepth understanding. Good luck. wrc
