Default Memorial Day

Standing in line at the register on Saturday morning.

Memorial Day Weekend's about to get into full swing, so everyone was stocking up on the essentials: water, hot dogs, chips, soda. Beer.

The conveyor inched $113.37 worth of... stuff... forward. Most of it was comprised of the two 30-packs and a bottle of Jack.

"Ah, that's right..."

It wasn't a whisper, but she wasn't engaging in conversation either.

Standing about 5'2" with Curly, short, grey and silver hair, the cashier was round enough that the pleats in her khakis stretched apart.

I smiled from behind sunglasses hiding bloodshot eyes and last night's hangover.

"This is that holiday where everyone celebrates the dead soldiers by getting drunk."

It's the mid-west. Jesus carries a lot of water out here. There's still a generation of people that hold sacrosanct things most of us don't understand.

These Proud-to-be Americans are the parents of the 'Merica-Fuck-Yeah generation. The kids, it seems, watched the ritual of remembrance and remembered - as kids do - only certain fun details.

Like the loud jets at air shows. Race cars swinging around a track. Crowds cheering at baseball games. The annual pilgrimage to one of the events.

How could they not see it at as a party and ignore the inherent sacred tradition they were expected to foster and embrace?

I just swiped a credit card and pushed the cart to the truck wondering:

Who's at fault here, lady?
The student?
Or the teacher?

Hey, IZA. Don't know if you're looking for a critique, or just getting something off your chest, but 'Curly' doesn't need to be capitalized and it's not clear who the dialogue is coming from.

And (it may just be how the formatting came through), the last two lines need spaces between them.

Other than that, yeah, Memorial Day is just a party for most people. You ever see that video of a highway in Israel on their memorial day? They remember.
