Default Conundrum before I've even started

I was about to start my second full fictional work and I suddenly find out it was made into a movie fairly recently.

Has anyone had this problem arise and if so, did you go through with writing your story anyways? Thoughts? I'm torn between writing it anyways and going through a brainstorming week to try new ideas.

If you have a completely original way to tell the story that is more interesting than the existing version, I suppose it would be worth writing it down. It would have to be far and away better, though. Otherwise, what's the point?

Fair enough. I mean my original story I feel is still fairly compelling, but the originality of it now needs some work. I just need to make sure that if I do decide to go through with it, I go through with it because I can reintroduce something really original without compromising the quality of the work itself. That's the balance I guess.

Someone made a movie with your exact same characters, setting, premise and plot?

The main character was extremely similar (although I was planning on working on the backstory more), the setting and premise is virtually identical, and the plot points are also extremely similar (besides a few motivating factors).

Yes but you didn't write it. You'll bring yourself to it and that will make it different.

Also, you don't know what you have 'til you have it. Anya's right - write your story. Then decide.

Yeah I think I was planning on going through with it anyways, but it was more a matter of how you guys might feel about a situation like this.

Maybe some new plot lines or characters will unveil themselves as I write, thanks again for the advice guys!

Honestly my first story was brat of a prince becomes beloved king. Hardly original. However now it is finished I've had more than one agent comment on its originality.
