I was planning to take the gasoline and run. Oil prices might spike again soon.

Oh, that's a worry.

We ran out of coffee... so instead of coffee, it's oil at the mo.

I'm used to it per litre.

It used to be up to $1.67!

It's now back down to $0.99 or thereabouts.

Well, it's kind of a half way for us. We used to have high oil prices, but our currency was A$1 to US$0.96. Now it's down to US$0.67. Commodity currencies, tch.

*jaw drops*

Gas prices below a dollar? Impossible! It used to be pushing four bucks for us, but now we're down to a bless 1.60s area...*looks suspicious* What makes Australia so special, anyway?

We had guns. Then, in '96 or thereabouts, they were banned, after mass killings.

It's really tight. You can't even get air guns or AA/BB/CC (whatever they are called) guns. Only 5.2 % of Australia has access to guns.

Not counting the drug lords and other bad people who smuggle them in illegally and use them against now-defenseless people?

Banning them altogether was a pretty dumb move. Restrictions would be fine, because right now (at least in the US) anyone with money can get a gun.

Not true, Night Wanderer! You need a license for most firearms--including BB guns in some states. They are BB, by the way. I have three

...and the family has four shotguns and a .38...

...and a formidable nerf collection

Fine. Anyone with a heavy rock can get a gun. (If you throw it at the store owner's head hard enough.) Better?

I don't have any guns...but I do a mean forefinger-thumb pistol!

Well not if the store owner has a shotgun, his finger might twitch when he gets knocked unconscious, and then thrower will be just so much Swiss cheese.

Do gun shoppe owners generally tote shotguns behind the counter?

Only the evil ones.

In which case I would point my finger at him.

And maybe shout "BANG!" for extra effect.

Actually, Australia's doing a lot better than countries that permit guns in terms of crime. Banning them altogether does work, if the government knows how to work it. The government at the time did.

According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics, the murder rate has dropped but violent assaults have gone drastically up (time frame from 1990-2004). That covers the period of change-over to tight gun restrictions.

Since the ratio of assaults to assault reports has remained stable, they say that "the increase in recorded rates of assault therefore appears to reflect a genuine increase in the incidence of assault" (page 3).

Perhaps in the dearth of guns people turn to less lethal weapons, which would account for increased assaults. That makes sense; after all, the availability of weapons has little effect on people's desire to hurt each other. So crime in general has not gone down.

Aha, but you understand that it was only taken away in the very late 1990's. So they retaliated. But now it's died down... and that's only NSW.

Crime really has gone down, now; although it will always be there.

I'm inclined to think that crime has more to do with factors like the economy, education, cultural tolerance for violence, etc. But perhaps that's a discussion for another time and place. (The intellectual board, at least!) Sorry for the tangent!

So... back on topic: I believe you're the proprietor of this fine establishment? I'll take a "Dog Bog" ("Highly concentrated doggy ear medicine, mixed with paint thinner and a piece of dry ice. Not for dogs, it will kill them.") Devon might have the medicine in stock!

(The OP must've been one sick puppy... )

There's no proprietor, seeing as this is a madhouse. I'm just the warden.

Are you sure you won't try the mucus soup? Special dessert.

SW, why are you displayed as "Heartbreaking Writer of Staggering Genius"? That should be Maylet. I think something went screwy.

The heartbreaking part, or the staggering genius?

Unfortunately, I've forgotten the one before.

You mean Homer's Oddyssey was Nothing?

I think it's the heartbreaking part. Every time I think of you I begin to cry
