Default amazon categories

How often do people change categories once you've self published? I keep reading you should change every now and again so you're picked up by the algorithms, whatever that means. My books doing well I think, and although I'm tempted to change to maybe push sales higher, I'm also worried it might have the opposite effect and I'll plummet down the rankings. Anyone any experience of this?

I think a couple changes is fine but when I see indies switching their catas every so often trying to find some loophole, it irritates me.

The other day I saw fiction books in non-fiction as some weird ploy.

It's like really?

How are people supposed to shop.

Yep, on reflection i've decided to leave it and change some of the keywords instead. Much less chance of a disasterous drop off the cliffs of amazon that way
