Default Moral Relativism

Okay Mohican... I know. I know.

I take full responsibility and am not attached to any of these posts youíre going to delete.

You donít have to PM me with a warning. I know.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas.

In my defense... it was all about the humor.

Okay... I know. I do.

I really don't think I've seen anyone make such a concentrated effort to prove he's an idiot in such a short time span.

Plus, if you're insulting people with gay jokes in this day and age, you're either:

A) a raging homophobe.

B) a self loathing, closeted gay man.

C) a moron.

D) a combination of A and C or B and C.

Okay -- I think that covers it for now.

Jesus Christ. Why dont we all just let it be water under the bridge? All parties let it go.

To answer the OP. I would fall on the side of moral absolutism but not absolute justice. Portia sums it nicely:

The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It becomes
The thronŤd monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings,
But mercy is above this sceptered sway.
It is enthronŤd in the hearts of kings.
It is an attribute to God himself.
And earthly power doth then show likest Godís
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider thisó
That in the course of justice none of us
Should see salvation. We do pray for mercy,
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea,
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

There has to be mitigation, at times omission, and sometimes outright unconditional forgiveness. Someone who in drunkenness runs over a grandma aught be held accountable but the fact that he lacked intention should mitigate the sentence. If a cop catches a teenager in say an attempted robbery he might for the greater benefit yielded by mercy allow the kid to go free. In some cases though, the rarest to my mind, would be outright forgiveness. There isnt any better depiction of this in cinema that I can think of than Ferrar's Bad Lieutenant.

Spoilers in this but I would highly reccommend watching the film:

The old question goes round if you were hiding jews during the holocaust and nazis came looking for them would you lie to protect the people. In the realm of moral absolution you would have the obligation to tell the truth. That you were hiding them. And this may seem immoral but the morality of it is, if the practical lack, is that in telling the truth not only are you keeping your own conscience clear, not only are you declaring your opposition, you are at last giving the criminal the opportunity to do right. That he does not do right damns him all the more. If he does he redeems himself in some small measure and does honor to the moral law that guides everyone.

An extreme example aye but take that example and rewind it back fifteen years. Had everyone told the truth and sought the truth to the best of their ability (because in my mind truth and morality are components of the same metaphysics) the nazi regime would have been avoided.

(Prodigalson searches for that old green robe he once had -- ah, there it is -- puts it on.)

That was a bit of unnecessary regression there, boys. Too much telling and not enough showing (in the literary sense.)

(Takes robe off, puts it back in box.)

Blue brings up a good example of the failure of moral absolutism. Morality is relative, culture to culture and time to time. We think it's immoral to covet a neighbor's wife; in some cultures it would be offensive to refuse to take her to bed.

In our own society, we have gone from marrying women at the onset of puberty, to condemning men who don't wait until a woman is what would have, back then, been considered a "spinster."

... the predominant nature of relative morality as manifested by man (as opposed to that of a woman) is mutually exclusive to his sex

Depends which species you use it on, I suppose. They don't all have the same gift of speech.

Not that I'm knocking your proclivities. Each to his own.

It wasn't farmyard animals I had in mind. Vermin, perhaps, or even insects.
But it's instructive to see where your expertise lies.

There’s a twist – you went from standard small penis humor to something that implicates a general lack of standards etc. Effective.

Seriously -- it’s hard to tell the same joke 3 or 4 times is row and make it even more hilarious each time!

Plus, there are a lot of subtleties and choices to be made when employing small penis humor.

For example, you could have said magnifying glass, but microscope is even funnier because if you need a microscope to see something, it has to be, really, really small.

So, good job.

Don't overthink it, Honey.

Why are dicks so funny? Maybe we need a thread about that.

Morality can only be talked about in theory. And can only be 'proved' by logic.

And because of this, unfortunately, it is by definition relative.

It is perhaps the greatest and ultimate task for philosophy to define what we might call moral absolutes.

Ask even simple questions such as are 'thou shalt not kill' or 'thou shalt not steal' moral absolutes and you'll find a heap of grey areas which are tricky to untangle. The obvious one to polarise these discussions is 'is taxation stealing?'.

As a start though I think it's fair to hold that there are behaviours which are [I]universally[I] preferable. That no-one wants to be stolen from, or murdered, makes honesty within trade, and non-violence universally preferable, and on this basis philosophically you can put the two injunctions forward as absolutes.

Aside from that it's still true that absolutes are reserved for hard science rather than philosophical abstractions.

Wouldn't know.
Do know the antics of mine have brought a smile to my face on more than one occasion.

Sorry, mods.
Seems I've slipped out of the subject.
