Default Word Vault Flash Fiction Contest!

It's that time! The Word Vault Flash Fiction Contest, advertised in each issue of the Writer's Beat Quarterly, asks you to try using some of the lesser-used words of our language.

Since WBQ22 is currently offline (we're working on it!), let me post the six words here:
bombilation - n. - a loud droning or din. From Latin "bombizatio," the buzzing of bees.
Example: His head-cold ruined his musical evening, turning the concert into painful bombilation.

edacious - adj. - related to eating, especially in a vorarious, devouring way.
Example: The table was a mess of crumbs and spills after the men's edacious feasting.

fimbriated - adj. - 1. having a fringe or border; 2. a fancy way to describe hairiness.
Example: Though blind, the old weaver could still use touch to tie the fimbriated edges of rugs.

jiggery-pokery - n. - dishonest dealings. From "jouk" (unknown origin), meaning dodging or skulking, and "pawky" (Scots and North English), meaning artful or sly.
Example: From chasing ambulances to selling fake prescriptions on the street, there wasn't a bit of jiggery-pokery he didn't have a greasy hand in.

kakistocracy - n. - government by the least moral people. From Greek "kakistos," the worst.
Example: I won't stand by while our town turns into a kakistocracy under the leadership of that immoral hound!

virescent - adj. - 1. becoming green or greenish; 2. (poetic) similar to "verdant"; 3. (biology) an unhealthy coloration, as when plants that aren't normally green turn green, or when green plants become yellowing-green. From Latin "virescere," to become green.
Example: The blockage upstream turned the lake into a virescent haven for frogs.
Now that you have expanded your vocabulary with several new words, we would like you to put them into action by writing a piece of flash fiction. Your story can be in any genre or on any theme, but it must contain at least one of the words appearing in The Word Vault.

Maximum word limit is 250.

Deadline for entries: 1 July 2009.

Entries should be submitted through the website, via a Private Message (PM) to Winterbite, Devon, Firefly, or Tau.

After the closing date, we will select a winner, who will be contacted prior to publication. The winning entry will then be published in the next issue of Writer’s Beat Quarterly.

I always loved flash fiction, did nothing but for about 4 years(probably more)

so sounds very interesting to try just for the sake of doing a flash again, have been taking a break.

thanks for the post and info HoiLei

It's fun doing flash fiction and using set words. I used to love doing poems using a given ten words

I have never tried flash fiction. It does sound really interesting though. I might try it sometime soon.

If I can get the spare time in the next 34 hours I'm gonna have a crack at this, sounds like fun.

I am going to try to get in before the deadline too. This would be my first time doing this, so it sounds really fun.
