To all you Turkeys out there . . . May you be moist and come with tasty sides!

A lot of mixed feelings today. My dad died just before Thanksgiving last year -- so we kind of skipped it. Then we lost my mom in March. So this will be our first Thanksgiving (and Christmas) without both of them.

Usually, there was a big gathering of siblings -- six of us -- and their families -- but this year everyone is staying at home or going elsewhere. It will be just my family and my brother's family this year. Four adults and four kids -- a small group compared to the huge gatherings of past years.

As much fun as it was, it could be pretty chaotic and there was always a dash of family dysfunction. It will be calmer and more relaxing this year -- and much easier to manage. It will be sad on some level -- but I'm sure we'll share lots of memories -- and we all have a lot for which we can be thankful. And that's what it's all about.

(the goblin didn't know what thanksgiving really meant as he came from an entirely different background, though he guessed that the americans were indeed lucky now, saying "...yes, count yourself lucky now, for here in geneva there is no barrier between halloween and christmas, just two months of a growing guilt towards some imposed shopping norm, where often I find it hard to remember the true meaning of behind either for all this indulgent commercialism, where just perhaps then, I mean since we eat turkey at christmas over here, this year I will turn my chirstmas into your thanksgiving, something not for what I bought but just for what I shared...")

Happy Belated! Missed this one yesterday, but there's turkey and sweet potato in the fridge.

Even though we had turkey at my brothers -- we didn't get any leftovers -- and that's the best thing about cooking a turkey. So I'm smoking a turkey on my grill today.
