Research. I think you should drive down to the "ghetto," see if you can find a group of black guys and ask them. And be sure to use the phrase "ghetto rat."

All i want is a general idea of what people in the "'ghetto'" are like.

I didn't have time to fraze everything carefully as to not come off as "racist".

If you weren't racist, the phrasing wouldn't have been a problem.

Tahdas, I think you should give some consideration to running away from home.

People also call me racist for calling black coffee black coffee. Honestly i don't give a f*ck if people think im racist or not, I just don't feel like getting in war with a bunch incompetent hypersensitive idiots who think its fun pick on 14 year olds on an Internet forum.

I having a lot of trouble right now so gve me a f*ckimg break.

As my wife says to our 8-year old -- "Use your words carefully."

P.S. -- I didn't see the above. It's funny when a kid wants to hang out with adults and be taken seriously -- but when someone calls him on his B.S., he whines that he's being picked on. You can't have it both ways.

Don't doubt it.

I expect there'll be a lot more to come if you fail to remove some of those preconceptions you've been inculcated with. My advice is to get out of wherever you are as soon as is realistically feasible and see the world. You'll inevitably pick up some different pre-conceptions but hopefully, at least, they will be less crass.

And that doesn't mean trundle around ghetto streets late at night... it just means that a more diverse life experience almost always gives someone a more open minded outlook. With that, I suspect, the amount of people who might consider you racist would fall.

My guess is, he's not really a racist. But he's likely been brainwashed by the idea that if you make some effort to not come off like a racist twat you are being politically correct.

The thing is, it's not so much about being "sensitive" as much as people making the often valid assumption that what you say and how you say it is a reflection of what's really in your heart and mind. Of course, there's also something to be said for not sounding like an idiot.

the only way to find out is to get down there yourself. no one could explain better then your own personal experience of it.
I personally would not and so I would not write about it It is too daunting an experience. only write what you are sure of.

not so sure about careful as much spareful. one or two words could be as effective as 10. it just depends on the sound how you say them.

It is supposed to be horrifying. Those people are Jews being rounded up in the Warsaw Ghetto to be taken to an extermination camp in cattle trucks; in all likelihood they were all dead within a year.

It should upset you. It should turn your stomach and make you want to weep.

They are people. People being fucked over by people. Don't think of it as an image, but as a symbol for what can happen when bad people are allowed to do what they want.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto

It really depends on which kind or demographical Ghetto you're referring to, Tahdas. One thing in common to all Ghetto's is poorness usually. Some fight to get out of the Ghetto, some don't. Research the possibilities of both and you should find some answers.

What was upsetting about the op ? The use of guetto rat?

LOL

This place. Then Mike with the holocaust pictures.

I grew up in the guetto, and I don't mind the term. Or was there more that was deleted?

There are definitely rats in every class. Trust me on this.

My suggestion if one is really interested in writing about some type of culture based on anything whether it is religion, money, class or fashion to name a few; is to immerse yourself in the culture. There are some excellent books out there on poverty and gangs, or gangs or the ghetto or whatever it is that you are interested in.
Whether people want to admit it or not, strive is what makes a good story and being poor, violent and lost tends to make good stories especially if the character wins in the end against all odds.
In my day job I am a behavioral specialist for littles. I work with parents, teachers and the children. Sometimes looking from the inside out gives us new perception but tact in how you depict what you want is always important.
I am thinking rat was the problem word. Humans see rats as vermin and therefore bad. I personally love rats but even I have used the word as a derogatory statement. I hope you all work out your issues.

I'll agree, though, that this kid is "only" racist in that he's an average person in a highly racist society. Hopefully he'll have an opportunity to examine his values as he grows up.
