Icon1 Summer poetry contest

Bomb the universe. Eradicate every trace.
Still every molecule, cease every atom’s vibration, and set everything back to naught.
Take back time. Take it all back.
Undo everything I’ve ever done, every breath, blush, and heartbeat.
Take back Einstein, Edison, Da Vinci, and Pythagoras.
Wind it all up, until you find the very beginning, and then set it all rolling from scratch.
Anew.

Let the millenniums pass.
Give everything a second chance.
Some mistakes will be fixed and now ones made as time rolls by again,
As time is dished out and once more the stars find their places in the sky.

Your mother and father will meet once more in that golden moment
In a bookstore in Pittsburgh in nineteen-eighty-one.
They’ll have their first date again,
And your father will remark again
On that peculiar springtime bird.
And you’ll be born, four years later. And more time will pass.
You’ll grow into a beautiful woman and meet me again at a friend’s birthday.

I want to reset everything, because I want a second chance,
When that pivotal moment in our relationship rolls around,
And this time I’ll make no mistake.

I’ll act with honour and humility
And make you proud of me.

This time.

Default Summer Poetry Contest

Ctrl V

I think that if you backed up far enough,
the office would look like static;
sound the like heels of a thousand tap shoes slapping hard on a dance floor
or something less romantic--
white noise.

We hundreds
granted 190 feet of carpeted freedom,
and shoved so tight together that you can smell the burning neuroses
after countless days of staring at those same dusty screens.

They give you Windows,
but you get no windows. And so begins the twitching,
the desperate flinging of a man at humanity;
desire for touch,
and then the inevitable,
pasting flesh upon flesh.
Some desperate concoction of an ideal life,
far from the confines of a thermostat world
(78 degrees of hand-selected slavery).

At five o'clock they come undone.
Moan and reach their hands to that fresh glimpse of sky,
a prayer to whatever god had carried safe their hearses to the site that day,
that he may deliver their reanimated lumps of selves home.

Copy, paste,
they repeat the cycle.
The control icon has worn off of my keyboard.
That is how men are.

Default Clone

Clone

Mr Clone walks free as the morning rain passes; He lives in shawls, scrubs the halls and sees through tinted glasses.
And on the eve of the year since his own beginning, he cleans for me and serves me too but still can’t help admitting, that he would have been so happy if I could have granted him a wife, someone to love him loyally and with whom to share his life.
And as I sit so high and true upon my airs and graces, I concede I could of indeed chosen to clone two people’s faces, but as I drift into the night in some unearthly hour,
I decide it took an imperfect world to grant me all this power.

Hand of my eye,
Reaching out,
Always grasping,
Unhappy hand.

Longing fingers,
Caressing what's there,
Touching what's not,
Peeling away.

Nothing inside,
An empty arm,
A hollow socket,
Trying to find peace.

'I love you' I cried,
As your hand slipped from my own.
'I'm sorry,' you sighed,
'I just want to be alone'.

It wasn't your fault,
Nor was it mine.
But your tears of salt...
I was running out of time.

I left you be,
In your world of the dark.
I ignored what you told me to see,
And listened to the night-time lark.

But you didn't come out,
And the more time that passed
The more I came to doubt.
And the more those doubts amassed.

I knocked once and twice,
My hands so cold
On your wall of ice.
Your heart was no longer mine to hold.

Then the door fell back,
And out the darkness seeped,
Opened just a crack
Yet my heart leaped.

But then I saw
You, still upon the ground,
And my breath came no more
As I realised what I had found.

On your cheeks a blueish hue,
Told me what I most feared,
I cried: 'I love you!'
As you finally disappeared.

Default Seasons

Love pushes through fertile soil
from the seeds of expectation as
fragrant blooms testify to the purity
and beauty of life anew.

Brilliant petals wither away
in the approaching heat of summer but
buds emerge on the solid limbs
of maturing oaks, children of the trees
open their leafy arms to catch the rain
and whisper dreams of the future
with the flutter from gentle breezes.

The chilling winds of autumn
rustle the restless leaves,
green of youth replaced
by the fiery colors of exuberance,
stems detach from the arms
of parents who watch with pride
but reluctance to let them
drift away to lives of their own.

Bare branches shiver in the ice of winter
as empty nests of departed birds
fill with snow while the sun hides
behind clouds of memories, shadows
of loneliness block the light of the future.

Leaves gather one onto the other
and share their nourishment into the soil
which becomes fertile once more.

A new generation of emerging offspring
push toward the sky beneath boughs
that long to cradle them as they
once embraced their own.

The springtime sun dispels the shadow
and the joy of blooming life returns.

Breaking the Mold

They dictated the rules of the game and commanded me to play;
A mold brimming with their dogma, set into my ignorant hands.

In impassioned opposition, all defenders stand ready to collide.
Storm kissed winds, burn my flesh with a battered, redemptive cry.

My face tips to the darkening sky; hungry arms flinging wide.
Torrents of air draw to my lungs, I breathe of this supernatural life.

Unyielding powers of eternity, course through my immortalized veins.
Within my perfected soul, now glows a light that cannot be contained.

Copycat
By, B.K. Mitchell

Had I studied for my sums,
I woulda done just fine,
I’m not a wee bit dumb,
I only need to try…

Copycat, copycat,
Stinking, cheating copycat.
Eyes wandering off my own paper
Eyes peeking over to see
Answers written by Tommy Lee.

I could do so good in school,
If I could find a way to care.
When I go home every day,
My dad-passed out in his chair.
Mom nowhere to be found,
Looking somewhere for a fix,
Doing homework in this life’s,
Like building bridges out of sticks.

Liar, Liar,
Story-telling, quick-thinking liar.
Can’t trust anything that I tell you,
Don’t want you to really know me,
Cause then you will surely see.
The secret that I try,
So desperately to hide,
The holes within my life.
