Default Working on songwriting after a long break

Thereís music to this, and a melody. My recording set-up is now ancient, and Iím deciding what I want to do about that.

One

We pollinate
things we encounter
Fortify the buildings we can
Justify
living in boundaries
By telling ourselves
Itís all that we have

Life could be beautiful
It could be sacred
We could be one

I was unable
To switch off my channels
Identify or play by your rules
I wasnít strung
Like one of your pianos
For you to bang on
When you went numb

Life could be beautiful
It could be sacred
We could be one

I wasnít careless
With things that you cherished
Or put upon
By your ideas of fun
I wasnít nullified by
Your sense of humor
Or thrown away
When you were done

Life could be beautiful
It could be sacred
We could be one

Feels like they could be really nice lyrics to me -- it would be interesting to hear the music.

You probably already know you can start putting down songs with a minimum of equipment -- a couple of decent mics to begin with which you may already have.

If not, the mic anyone can get started with for only $150 or so is the Audio Technica AT2020. It's a great value and rivals mics that cost 3 times as much or more.

Otherwise, you just need an audio interface and a DAW. The Focusrite products are great and affordable interfaces. I use Cakewalk Sonar as a DAW -- I'd use Pro Tools -- but there's a monthly fee now. And there are tons of free amp sims and plugins. You need a lot of memory and processing speed though.

Of course, you'll immediately want more gear -- but you can get started and arrive at a working process for writing and recording with very little.

Look at a blog -- The Bedroom Producer -- the guy reviews all kinds of stuff, mostly software -- including all the free stuff.

I have a good friend here with a pro studio in his house, and Iím always invited to use it and him as engineer when heís in town.

I have an old M-audio interface and a new iMac, as well as a Blue microphone. So I can get basics down. Iím just deciding if itís worth it to get a pre-amp and all the rest of the stuff you know Iíll want once I start buying gear. Itís like a slippery slope, and Iíve never been a good engineer.

I've got an android mobile. Pretty extravagant recording studio, I know, but hey, if you got the duckets...

I think you need to get a "shareable link."

This one says I need permission to access.

OK -- thanks.

After you upload the file -- right click on it -- you'll get an option called "get shareable link." Selecting it automatically copies it -- then paste away!

Ha ha -- yeah -- I made the switch over to the dark side a while back. Biggest mistake ever.

I had it explained to me, and I'm not sure why exactly -- but all the DAWS and interfaces run better on a Mac. I've got loads of speed and memory and I still have latency issues.

I like the song. Should the be in line six be by? Do you write the music, too. What is your voice like? I imagine this being sort of a "I'm Easy" song.

Thanks for the typo catch. Yes ďbyĒ

I write the music, and that is my voice. This is a live recording, so I am playing and singing there. Iím waiting for some gear so I can track things separately. That should make it cleaner and clearer.

This is really good.

Lyrics that may seem a little cliche in spots take on new life when you hear them in a song -- and here you make them work.

The chord progression is a fairly common one but you mix things up with some good chord variations -- and of course, the melody is what makes it all come together. I spent ages fighting chord combinations that sounded familiar -- and I never got anywhere.

It certainly works well as a solo acoustic song -- very hard to pull off -- a tour around Youtube will show you that.

I don't know about the title -- I think when there is a well-known or almost iconic song with that title -- it's hard to get it out of your head. You might want to avoid that.

Anyway, if you're just getting back into it, this is a pretty great start.

Cheers.
