Remember the contested US Presidential election in 2000 (Bush v. Gore)? The voting punch cards in Florida required people to put holes in them, with the removed paper being "chads". The punchcards were machine-counted, and incompletely punched cards didn't get counted right and would need to be looked at one at a time. "Dimpled" or "pregnant" chads were when the hole in the voting card wasn't punched all the way through, but the indentation could be read for voter intent.

Pregnant chads also swim upstream in the spring to lay their eggs. It can get confusing.
