Default Byronic Misanthrope

Huddled in the open air. The restaurant umbrella tassels spread out and flail in the light breeze. In a squinting day, the under umbrella is heavy, and the dark mass that makes it so is bent close over the old journal. Writing, arms around brown dirty pages.

Dark unkempt thick and falling over hands and pages shields unwelcome looks. Pale blue eyes look out of the darkness searching the street for thieves that would steal the masterpiece. He sees her across the avenue.

She follows. But he cannot afford distractions.

"Mad World" held high and loud walks by taking forever to fade.

I often find it difficult to distinguish between a prose poem and poetic prose. For my tastes there ain’t enough poetic devices to satisfy my needs to make it a prose poem, then again it is what it is, and for a form as ambiguous as these who’s to say what it is or isn’t. I think there is poetry in the imagery and maybe an echo of ‘She walks in beauty, like the night’. The one no no I do have about this is it’s about writing, it is a very personal thing, there’s no rule to say it’s right or wrong, but I tend to find it a cheap cop out. He could have just as easily been contemplating elephant training, or robbing a post office with trained raccoons … what I’m trying to say is that unless it’s about the mundane keep the mundane away.

It's a snapshot. A still from the reel. It's evocative. Is it a poem? Is one scene a story? As you say, it is what it is. It's like a bullet in mid air. It's all power and purpose, but the story is where it came from and where it's going. I don't find it mundane though.
