Default First Writers Forum For Me

Hello members. This is the first forum that I've joined and I'm a little apprehensive. I've just started to write even though I've had the ideas floating around for years in my head. I write predominantly short story science fiction, but multiple stories happen in the same story arc.

I'm always interested in receiving criticism and I look forward to reading other people's work and learning and replying to their work.

As a really short bio, I'm a math and philosophy guy who also happens to be a co-owner of a music/art venue and sound engineer. Themes that have always interested me are existentialism in the face of decaying society and mental illness.

I look forward to participating!

J William

Well hello there JWilliam,

Welcome to Writer's Beat! Pull up a seat while I stock the fire and get the kettle boiling.

Please read the FAQs as they will give you a good idea for how things work aroung here.

So do you corporate those themes - mental illness and decaying society -- into your writing? Sci Fi is always fun.

Well, happy writing. See you around.

I haven't found an intersection of mental illness and decaying society yet. They touch here and there, but never as a significant point in any of my writing. If I try to consciously pull the two together, I'll have to reread a lot of my Phillip K Dick library to see how the master did it.

In general though, I love soft science fiction in the lineage of Dick and Heinlein. Inspirations on top of that are Alan Moore and Lovecraft. I enjoy the questions that science fiction can raise about us as humans more than the how things work found in hard sci fi, like Asimov or Herbert.

I'll get on the FAQs as quickly as I can.
