Will Scribble

It's gonna be hot
Summer time in South Florida will return
Unbearable heat will come

Air conditioning living will be de rigueur
(would be nice if I could get the truck's AC fixed)

But now ain't then

Now there is a breeze
The sun is warming this ol' animated meat and
bone juice sack

Lookin' at light on the tree leaves
wavin' at me from across the street

Both the Momma and the Poppa bird
are on the wire above their palm tree
hidden baby nest

It's Sunday

God is resting

And, as the banging goes on behind me
in the range, I sit in this parking lot
also resting

Monday will be here soon enough and it
will be back to work in the warehouse
filling orders and being friendly

But for now -
for now I can play the sensitive, contemplative writer

How you doin'?

I haven't seen the sun since October and I won't until late February. The days are short and the mountains block it anyway so we live in shadows.

But then again when it's too hot I faint like a victorian lady at the sight of a naked ankle.

I just can't get it right.

And don't we all feel like frauds? I know I most deffinitely do and, to paraphrase Neil Gaiman, I am waiting for the fraud police to come and get me.

You're holdin' up the line, Bud.

Ain't none of us here gettin' younger.

Well, except maybe pralina, AKA Dominika - it don't look like time has found her face's address yet.

But that don't let you and me off the hook.
We both know this house of cards could come down without a moment's notice.
So your stuff has been proofread. What is the next step. And no, postin' excerpts is not a viable path. Online print for those ebook moderns? Paper publication for dinosaurs like me that need spare crapper paper to haul around?

C'mon - the drama of our lives is ceaseless. Our best accomplishment is to make something out of it. Something strangers can read and say "Hey, that happened to me too" or "What a load of horse shit. I can write a better book than that" or "Oh, that poor man. His life has been sooo difficult (Yeah, I'm laughin' here).

Shall we start a GoFundMe to get this goin'?

Good job Nick. That piece put me right back in the Florida that I remember. A great relieve from today in NYC where it is cold and grey.

Hey, I'm glad it worked for you.

Maybe I best keep up this scribe appearance for another day or two.

Well, here's where I'm at with it, Nick. I still wasn't happy with it after the final proofreading, and IZA said something about it being fine as a collection of short recollections, but needing work to fill a novel's shoes, so I've reworked it a bit to make it flow better, and i'm happy with it now.

I was going to send it the 'rounds of regular publishers, to see if anyone picked it up, but now I'm thinking I should just go with a "vanity press" (is that the right term, where you pay to have a book printed?) and get some copies out there.

I'm up for suggestions.

Yeah, well I am of the independent ilk.
And throw the roll into this stall when you're done with it. I'm usin' my paper to write on.

Okay, okay - try it Tim's way.
And after those controlling, heartless sons of bitches have had their way with you, tyin' up your shit in legal limbo for years, then you can self publish.

Hope my copy makes it through the censors into the Philippines without gettin' me busted for importin' trash.

Now that I'm thinkin' more on Tim's suggestion I'm thinkin' that he has shown himself to be a smart guy about lots of things so maybe he can suggest an agent or two.

Some guy Tim knows.

Alright, alright, I'll find me an agent and see what they can do. Meanwhile I'll look into printers, and I'm thinking about seeing if the local weekly will publish some excerpts, or serialize it.
