I had just cut a 'frigerator cold cantalope in half. The power goes out. It had flicked off then on an hour ago. Forewarned, eh? Yeah, it's dark outside. After 9:00 P.M. At One this afternoon the kid up front broke the water line. No H20 until tomorrow. Don't bother me. There is a bucket of AC drippings on the back porch. More than enough wet stuff for a homeless seasoned guy. Offer it to my wife. She ain't interested.
O.K., get lighter. Get a candle. Get more candles and lighters. Get flashlights. Power don't come back on. Go check outside. Night time. People wanderin' about. Traffic signals may be out. Burglar alarms inoperable, perhaps. Economic times are tough. People become desperate. Some who were up against it in better days often find the boundary shifted with them on the other side now. "Home Invasion" is not a novel headline around here.
The bad guys get a little bolder in these circumstances.
Back into house. O.K., vet training kicks in. Eat some cantalope.
Gotta go back to work/lunch break over/will finish this later.
Nick, who you typin' to?
I dunno. Just tryin' to be polite.
Oh go on. Back to work with ya.
"Tryin' to be polite"-where does he get this stuff.
Hey- I can read that.
You still here? No work, no pay. No pay, no rent. You wanna be homeless again? You got a wife and 'keets now. Responsibilities.
Oh yeah. Thanks. I will finish the piece later.
There's a good lad.
Don't push it, Bucko. I ain't that ceeveelized.
Eat some cantalope. Open the safe. Peel out the Snubbie. Check charge. Snake shot round first out. Then two hollow point factory .38s followed by two factory hollow .357s. Turn on laser. Good to go. Ankle holster it. Eat more cantalope. Pull a .45. Get the mags. Just bought an extra one of these yesterday. Talked five dollars off the price. Ain't I the thrifty shopper. As fortune would have it a 50 round box of 230 grain factory hardball is at my toes. Start loading up. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Tap. Flash light into witness hole. Good. Do it again. Again. Again. Again. Drop piece mag, pull the slide to pop the round. Mag in. Rack. Drop. Load mag to capacity. Re-insert. On line. Oh yeah-decock safety on. Hip holster it. Finish cantalope. Secure spare mags into pistol case.
Next. Unzip the 12 ga. wrapper. Pump breech open. Clear. Drop one in the tube. Close. Yeah, the safety is on. Pull another from the side saddle and insert into belly. Sure is quiet outside. Another in. Another.
Power comes on. Stop loading. Power goes back off again. Continue loading.
Power comes back on. Again. Wait. It's staying on.
Set bang stick into case. Close it up and go back to watching "Old Yeller" on DVD.
So much for Hurricane Preparedness Drill today. Gonna check out generator readiness tomorrow. Wife will be buying more candles.
Think I'm startin' to get the hang of this South Florida lifestyle.
Through the smoke and fog there comes a form ... shape shifting ... could this be the Future?
