Default Successful love songs

It's hard to write a good love song without coming off as cliche and contrived nowadays. Which songs come to your mind when you conjure an image of a successful love song? My favorite modern love song is off OutKast's 3rd album, Aquemini. It is entitled Spottieottiedopaliscious.

When I first met my Spottieottiedopaliscious Angel
I can remember that damn thing like yesterday
The way she moved reminded me of a Brown Stallion
horse with skates on smooth like a hot comb
on nappy ass hair
I walked up on her & was almost paralyzed
her neck was smelling sweeter
than a plate of yams with extra syrup
eyes beaming like four karats apiece just blindin' a nigga
felt like I chiefed a whole O of that Presidential
My heart was beating so damn fast
never knowing this moment would bring another
life into this world
Funny how shit come together sometimes [ya dig]
One moment you frequent the booty clubs &
the next four years you & somebody's daughter
raisin' y'all own young'ns
now that's a beautiful thang
that's if you're on top of your game
and man enough to handle real life situations [that is]
Can't gamble feeding baby on that dope money
might not always be sufficient but the
United Parcel Service & the people at the Post Office
didn't call you back because you had cloudy piss
So now you back in the trap just that, trapped
Go on and marinate on that for a minute...

there's a verse from Spottieottie, which is not all love dovey, birds and bees, sweet flowers, and walks along the beach. That verse says it all to me. It reveals the reality of loving to me. It's an everyday thang. Love isn't pretentious, like some love poems/sappy songs. This verse shows it for what it is. At first, it's blinding, exciting, even frightening as you don't want to get burned by the searing flame that leaves you vulnerable. However, after awhile say, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, a lifetime... the fire dies down unless you stoke it repeatedly and place it as your most valuable possession.

The world is an unpredictable place. There are a lot of forces at work that will throw sticks into your spokes, ungrease your engine, de-tread your tires.. A completely unrelated happening can effect the relationship you have with your significant other direly.. since you two are so deeply intertwined in shared experience. Or maybe your jolting spark isn't there anymore. You two may have grown distant, complacent, and bored with yourselves. The love you sold me in 2001 by 2010 may not exist. Time is weathering on all people, places, and things. Both tangible and intangible. However, the mind can never forget the warmth of the backseat of your silver Buick LeSabre in nineteen ninety fo'.. we was parked on Ocean Blvd. our soundtrack; a Lionel Richie Mega Hitz album.. track seven.. on repeat. Or maybe its an instant, fleeting flash of you opening the refrigerator in the morning. The image creating a tingling sensation throughout my person and a salty discharge emanating from my eyes. Memory lane is where the love stands untested, where it is liberated and immortal. I'm gettin a little longwinded, I'd be surprised if anyone's made it this far, so I'll cut to the chase:
What are some of your favorite love songs and why?
How bout J.Lo's Love don't cost a thing.. lol.. talk amongst yourselves..

My favorite love song? Funnily, I heard it back in the 90's when it was first released and have listened to it ever since, but it was only a few months ago I realized it was a love song. It makes perfect sense now, though.

Metallica - Nothing else matters

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Yeah, trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know, that's right

Never opened myself this way
And life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters, yeah

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for things they say
Never cared for games they play
I never cared for what they do
I never cared for what they know
And I know, yeah yeah yeah

My favourite, well a friend of mine wrote a song for me, but I won't post it because its private.

I think I will post something else, maybe some John Mayer...I am on a Mayer kick right now.

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part
You roll outta bed and down on your knees
And for the moment you can hardly breathe
Wondering was she really here?
Is she standing in my room?
No she's not, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The giving up is the hardest part
She takes you in with your crying eyes
Then all at once you have to say goodbye
Wondering could you stay my love?
Will you wake up by my side?
No she can't, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

Now do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Baby won't you get them if i did?
No you won't, 'cause you're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part
Sorry, I don't many happy love songs

I have a very hard time imagining those Outkast lyrics sounding like a love song. Ah well, love songs ain't what they used to be

My favourite love song is probably Letter to Dana by Sonata Arctica. But coming close second is Ghost of a Rose by Blackmore's Night.

Dana, my darling, I'm writing to you
'cause your father passed away, it was a beautiful day
And I don't want to bother you anymore.
I used to hope you'd come back
But not anymore; Dana.

My eyes might have betrayed me, but I have seen
Your picture on the cover of a filthy magazine
And I think my heart just cannot handle that
Dana, my darling, would be so bad.

Dana my darling I'm writing to you
Your mother passed away, it was a really rainy day
And I didn't mean to bother you anymore
Your mother wished: Come visit your fathers grave, Dana

Your father disowned you because you have sinned
But he did forgive you in condition he was in
And I hope you won't do those things anymore
Dana my darling I'm waiting for

Dana O'Hara oh, Dana my dear,
How I wish that my Dana was here
Little Dana O'Hara decided one day
to travel away, far away

No, you can't surprise me anymore
I have seen it all before
But it seems I cannot let you go

And I think that I told you, I'd wait for you forever
Now I know someone else's holding you,
so, for the first time in my life - I must lie
Lie's a sin, mess that I am in,
Love is not the thing I feel now.
I promise you: I won't write again 'til the sun sets
behind your grave

Dana, oh, Dana I'm writing to you, I heard you passed
away; it was a beautiful day
I'm old and I feel time will come for me, my diary's
pages are full of thee

Dana O'Hara oh, Dana my dear,
How I wish that my Dana was here
Little Dana O'Hara decided one day
to travel away, far away

Letter to Dana is beautiful - I like it a lot as well. I'm quite fond of the older Green Day love songs as well. Don't have a favourite one, though. I really like Shy by Sonata Arctica as well.

Make sure that you can't see me, hoping you will see me.

Thank you all who've responded 8)!

Winterbite, I'll attempt to explain where I'm coming from in interpretting Spottieottie as my favorite love song of all times; the beginning lines are about the intial spark and attraction someone feels towards a fit member of the other sex. (her neck was smelling sweeter/than a plate of yams with extra syrup/eyes beaming like four karats apiece)
So he's feeling this initial attraction towards someone, they spark, get intimate, and conceive a child. (never knowing this moment would bring another
life into this world.
)
Suddenly his life, whether he was ready for a baby or not, is irrevocably changed. This forces personal growth on the two parents(One moment you frequent the booty clubs &
the next four years you & somebody's daughter
raisin' y'all own young'ns
)
He then goes on to say that life rolls along. Life doesn't care about you at all. It'll throw trials and tribulations at you that could dismantle everything you've worked for, including the thing you hold dearest, your family.

Thanks for the replies.. another one of my favorite love songs is Thank you by Led Zeppelin:
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Translated that way, it sounds like a gangsta-themed country song I guess it's just a thing with me that I've always liked a lot of imagery and idealism in my love songs.

Ilseum - Isn't it cool how Shy acts sort of like a sequel to Letter to Dana? That's why I love the whole power/symphonic metal scene so much... they're always coming up with something new to make you go, "Oh yeah... wow, that makes a lot of sense!"

Absolutely! I have to admit though, that Sonata Arctica is the only band I know in that genre. Or wait, Avantasia, too. Could you provide me with any other names?

I remember the first time I heard Shy (a friend of mine was gently drowning me with SA songs) I went 'Dana..? How cool! '

Avantasia? Not really a band. More of a rock opera thing, with contributing musicians from all over the power metal map. Awesome idea.

Bands that are like SA... Nightwish is very similar. Also from Finland, same style--the female-fronted version of SA, one might think. Blind Guardian and Rhapsody and Sypmphony X all come to mind, but those are all a little rougher than SA's smoother, more progressive sound. If you like Avantasia, though, you would probably like those bands--they've all contributed a member or two to Avantasia. Avantasia is also kind of connected with Kamelot, which is also great. You'd probably like Kamelot.

I think a "successful" love song would have to be Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight."
Clapton, being the Legend that he is, keeps it classy, very smooth, and cliche-free.

Actually, I think Disney's songs from 1990-1996 or 98~ were excellent examples of working love songs. Examples, Collins' You'll Be In My Heart.

As a complete sap and a sucker for romance, I like sentimental love songs, so most of the stuff by Taylor Swift fits the bill for me. As a favourite, I would have to choose 'Mary's Song (Oh My My My)' with Love Story and You Belong With Me close runners up.

I like Tell Laura I Love Her. I know I'm fourteen, and it's from the sixtys, but I love the story it tells in the words.

Yes! I love Disney songs. That song, and Can you feel the love Tonight? are some prime love songs. A lot of Disney Movies have based their plots around love, so it's no surprise that their love songs are great.

Thank you! I'll have a look at those!

And thanks for putting me straight on Avantasia - I got the music from a friend, and assumed it was a band :P

Oh, nice! Nice selections everyone! I can't believe I forgot about Wonderful Tonight.. and Can you feel the love tonight, there is so much raw power and emotion created by the sound of certain vocal notes in that song.

A sleeper pick on my part is, Sugar Magnolia by the GD.

Might not be well known, but I really like this song and it reminds me of someone in some of the lines:

Antonia by Motion City Soundtrack

She makes a lot of abstract art
She haggles for the cheapest price
She never orders take-out food
Before ten o'clock at night

She's really into snow mobiles
She owns a lot of nice flashlights
She cares for all the stupid cats
That never found their way home

She shaves her legs with ginsu knives
She quotes a lot of Annie Hall
She misplaced her virginity
Back in 1995
She's what's keeping me alive
She's the pizza of my eye (i don't think it's pie.. but i'm not positive)
Without her near me I would not survive

It gets cold when she's not around
I float until I sink and get swallowed up
It's so cold when she's not around
I wait for her to come home and tell me I'll be fine

She's always eating Captain Crunch
She sings a lot of Ben Folds Five
She's scared to death of cobra snakes
Just like Indiana Jones

She tells the dumbest knock knock jokes
She drinks a lot of Chardonnay
She hates the way I comb my hair
But she married me last june
She was the bride I was the groom
I cried a lot and then we screwed
Without her in my life I would be doomed

It gets cold when she's not around
I float until I sink and get swallowed up
It's so cold when she's not around
I wait for her to come home and tell me I'll be fine
Tell me I'll be fine

She loves the smell of Christmas trees
She sneezes when she sees bright lights
She fainted on the kitchen floor
When her father passed away
Our baby girl is due this May
And when the little lady grows up
I hope that she will be just like
Her mother.

Flipping my two cents in your general direction.

All I Need by Radiohead

I am the next act waiting in the wings
I am an animal trapped in your hot car
I am all the days that you choose to ignore

You are all I need
You're all I need
I'm in the middle of your picture
lying in the reads

I am a moth who just wants to share your light
I am an insect trying to get out of the night
I only stick with you because there are no others

You are all I need
You're all I need
I'm in the middle of your picture
lying in the reads

It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all right
It's all right

It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all right

A really powerful song, it builds up, holds back and lets out every feeling of love and heartwrench you've ever felt at the end. If you're going to search for it, some the lower quality uploads on youtube really don't do it justice.

"All I need" by The Hollies. One of the greatest love songs in rock history.
