Default Nothing against it, but somewhat disturbing

It's quite startling to see all the emoticons.
For example, take this one (which I've added to my signature, anyway)
:beatdeadhorse5:
and
:asshole:
and

and
:hang:
and this one titled 'saddam'

and
:9:

... see?

there are also long - for a emoticon - ones
:16: (which is also quite disturbing)
and
:81:
and
:23:
and
:77:
and
:76:
and
:75:

... see, again?

Nothing against it - well, mostly - just a little disturbing, that's all.

Well, those are the remnants of Daniel's reign, basically. We can remove them if we get a general consensus from the membership.

I agree. I think most of those particular emoticons are pretty pointless and somewhat rude.

I'd be happy to see all the violent, nasty ones go.

I also agree. I can't see that many of those emoticons could even be used in legitimate situations around the forums.

Good to see I'm not alone... although I'm guilty of subjecting the non-stop beating of the horse to my signature. It's gone, now. The new one is fine, I think.

So there are things that are violent and maybe funny, but you know sick. And somebody might find them and see them. So they should be eliminated.

And this is a board for WRITERS??????????????????????????

I'm not a big fan, although some of them are quite humorous. But, then again I don't text message either.

It's not a question of whether they are funny or not; they just don't serve any purpose here. There are plenty worth keeping, and maybe we could add some fun new ones, but we don't need - or use - most of what is there now.

Quite a few do seem pointless. I know I wouldn't miss them.

I'd like to see more that were useful, not just the cutesy ones. Better editorial symbols and the like. I know there are a few of them, but they are somewhat hard to interpret, for example, it might just be my poor eyesight, but I cant really tell the difference between and , other than their vertical position relative to the line. It would be nice to standardize to some degree so that anything on the upper portion of the line-height used the down arrow like the Add Quotes symbol does, and those on the lower portion used the up arrow symbol. (Hope that made sense).

Other non-standard symbols for common critique statements could also be useful, like: "confusing sentence", "mixed tense", "mixed POV", "active/passive verb usage", "repetitive use of word", etc.

On that note, I'm fairly handy with graphics programs. If needed I'd be more than willing to help put some custom smilies together for that purpose.

That's what the world needs: making critiquing even more mindless and push-button.

Maybe it would be best to jump straight to Hollywood and just a smilie little thumbs up and a thumbs down.

I know what you mean, awford. If you're doing a long crit, or a couple in a day, it gets very tiring having to write 'delete this' or insert that', and 'repetition', as well as explanations and comments.

And I have to disagree, Lin, because I don't think it's push-button editing anymore than when line editors mark up a manuscript with their symbols. You still have to read the text and determine if there are errors, what they are, and how to correct them. The push-buttons are there to make it a little quicker and easier, that's all.

... although wouldn't it be a great idea to have an addict smilie? That would be suitable to most of us...

[Edit: I changed an "I'm with stupid" one to "Addict Here"... It's not clear because I'm using paint. Photoshop, etc are on my other PC... so if anyone is remotely interested... well, just ask or do it yourself. Paint makes it... well, paint's bad.

there!]

I actually laughed quite a bit at most of these...yes, my sense of humor is morbid, to say the least, but I think you could remove most of them with nobody noticing. But keep the dead horse. That's hilarious.
