It may seem that way, but trust me - we do a lot. It's not as glamorous a position as many would like to believe.

We keep things running smoothly, we moderate posts to make sure there isn't any flaming happening, we move and delete posts that are inappropriate, and we generally make sure all the members have a enjoyable on-site experience.

Members never see us doing these things, of course, but rest assured that we are doing a lot more than "nothing".

Hope this clears it up.

SD.

I'm sure if you had access to the forums hidden to everyone but administration/moderators, you'd see that there's a lot going on. :-)

Default new mod chimes in

Hi papere!

As a new moderator, I was surprised to realize how much goes on behind the scenes. In addition to what Greg House said, moderators also come up with most of the challenges and prompts, judge contests, put together the e-zine, etc.

In most cases, the best moderation is invisible moderation, or so I think!

Moderators also welcome newbies and point them in the right direction, offer advice, answer queries, critique writing, judge contests...
