Misplaced Modifiers
Misplaced Modifiers
A word or phrase that unintentionally modifies a word, sometimes with humorous results. Place modifying words or phrases close to the word it modifies.
While boarding at the kennel, the trainer will handle your dog contains a misplaced modifier. The dog will be boarding at the kennel, not the trainer.
You can correct this by moving the right subject closer to the modifier: While boarding at the kennel, your dog will be handled by the trainer. Though the corrected sentence is in passive voice, the right word is now being modified.
