Default ghostwriting-$100 per 1,000 words?

I was looking around on elance, being delusional that someone would hire me, and noticed that most of the clients offer an average of $100 for every 1,000 words.

That seems kind of low to me. If I spend my time writing a 50,000 word book, I would want more than $5000 bucks. But, I have to wounder, is this the typical pay for ghostwriters? At least those just starting?

Yup. You're competing with bright, well-educated fluent English speakers from India, Sri Lanka, and other parts of the world where (by purchasing power) $5k is seriously good money.

English is a strange language. It can be understood through tough thorough thought though.

Well, having worked with fluent English speakers from India and other parts of the world, my impression is those particular brands of non-native English might not lend themselves to the kind of more nuanced writing that might be required for ghostwriting. But maybe that depends on the kind of ghostwriting; like if it's something technical or more like a biography etc.
