Default Need Help Coming Up With a Reason for a Cold War

I've been thinking about writing a book about a cold war with a habited Mars, but I'm not really sure what the cold war could be over. I know that I want it to last a while, and for it to have similarities to the actual Cold War, but I also want it to be able to be different enough to stand on its own tenents as a realistic series of events.

I plan on writing a mars that didnt lose its magnetic field in its distant past, so it still has an atmosphere and developed life alongside earth. Most of the water is below the surface, however, and is pumped out of the ground by machinery. The 'canals' that astronomers saw in the 1800's were actually the civilizations built around water sources closer to the surface. In the 1960's the Mariner 4 flew over and took images of the surface, showing the life forms that were living on the surface of the world, proving that Mars was inhabited. We spent around maybe a decade or so (have to do a bit more research on this part) sending radio signals towards them, trying to get some back. Eventually we did. After a few more years translating their language into something we could understand, full contact was made between the two planets. In the early-to-middle twenty first century, we finally were able to send and recieve ambassadors, further connecting the two planets, and after that, we had a bit of immigration between the two. Not too much, as space flight was still expensive, but just enough so that there is a bit of a population of humans on mars, and a bit of a Martian Population on Earth.

I'm not a very political person, or very knowledgeable on politics, but I plan on doing some research on cold war era politicians and history to help me out with that. I was hoping that the people here on Writers Beat would be able to help me with this, as I'm a little out of my depth.

This isn't my area, but I hope someone will come along and help you with this soon.

This really isn't my genre. But maybe one of the planets puts up a defensive barrier of some kind, and that makes the other suspicious about plans for an attack. I think a cold war would have something to do with fear and mistrust, so you just need something to set it off. And maybe there's a political and economic system on Mars where they've actually figured out how to live peacefully and have everyone prosper and there are forces on earth who are threatened by that -- so some kind ideological war as well. That would set up a scenario that might be similar to our Cold War.

That would be clones which is about right for a reason to trigger a cold war , No? Or the devitalizing of the dead in general would be a huge problem for a planet as health care would be over the top.

Seriously bone, skin, organ harvesting would be my pick. To participate in the physical realm of the senses which they may not have down. They maybe vastly irregular fading away in spots a multitude of connecting blanks.

Earth's advantages the benefits are in the physical, I think it should be about ripping off the physical.

The US versus USSR cold war was an excuse for exorbitant military spending. Unless you want your characters to be more idealistic then you can reflect on how certain segments are gaining from this cold war, and how it leaves other areas in want.

A big part of the cold war was proxy wars for control of other developing countries- Vietnam, Korea, that sort of thing. Perhaps another planet is being colonized and both planets want to make the new colonies in their own image?

Kosmo the cold war happened because of simple reasons. There are even cold wars between families for similar reasons that the US/Russia had theirs. Imagine that huh...smh.

Anyway, since it's your story and you know the climate and characters of that mars/earth I'll give you a template so you can use your imagination to fill it in. Reasons for a cold war.

- Fear of spread of an opposing idea (which has taken root at the other side)
- Dislike of one great leader over another great leader.
- Fear of the other guys superweapon.
- Dislike of an economic system (e.g. Capitalism vs Socialism)
- Refusal of a people to share ideas with the another people.

Anyway. Hope it's informative for you. g'luck with the story. martian/earth colony drama is always interesting.
